Chicken Coops $200 to $500

Chicken Coops Reviews

If you’re browsing here, you’re likely looking to buy a chicken coop online that is higher quality than a few of the cheaper varieties, but not so expensive, it’s simply out of reach financially. There are a lot of chicken coops for sale in the $200 – $500 price range, which is generally in the “sweet spot” of what people are (ideally) wanting to spend on a better quality coop.

If you are still hoping to find a few cheaper chicken coops that may also suit your needs, check out our reviews on chicken coops under $200 here! Otherwise read on, and we’ll take a look at the next “level” of chicken coops that can be bought online.

What we noticed in the “under $200” range is that owners occasionally had to make a few modifications to the coops to make them work effectively for their flock. We are hoping that, with an increase in price, comes an increase in quality as well…take a look at the findings below! They are listed in no particular order.

What Others Say…

Pros

  • Easy Assembly
  • Holds Up to 4 larger chickens (more if raising Bantams or Silkies etc.)
  • Good design features
  • Attractive design
  • Affordable coop for the money
  • Easy cleaning because of the slide out floor tray

Cons

  • Wood somewhat thin and can split
  • May need to add another layer of sealer for added protection against weather
  • Wire on ceiling of the run will cave in if an animal (or person) lands on it (which has happened) since the mesh wire is only attached by staples
  • Needed a few reinforcements to make it more durable (new latch, better securing mesh in the run, adding hinges to roof)
  • Not predator proof against larger predators
Summary

This coop was reasonably priced for it’s size and features. Many owners appreciated it’s ease of use and design. Some said the coop worked great after staining it to better protect if from the elements. Others added reinforcements like better securing the wire mesh in the run. Without this,  the run can collapse if anything (or anyone) happens to stand on top of it.

Some reviewers said a large predator easily got past the mesh and door to take their ducks or chickens, so locks were added to prevent this.

All in all, many people enjoyed this coop for what it offered but many others added reinforcements to make it more durable against predators and the elements. The coop is of better quality and design than those in the “under $200” category but has its limitations.

  • Attractive design
  • Houses 4 chickens comfortably
  • Easy Assembly
  • Amazon will work with customers if any problems arise i.e. shipping issues, broken parts etc.

Cons

  • Pieces broken upon arrival (from shipping)
  • Needs waterproofing to prevent leaks
  • May need improved latches to keep larger predators out (Fox, Raccoons etc)
  • Cheaper, thin materials
Summary

This coop received a large number of reviews and the vast majority were positive! We’re not saying the coop was ready to go right out of the box…but almost. Many reviewers noted that the waterproofing was not sufficient and added paint or stain to the siding. Others added additional caulking/sealant over the screw holes in the roof area and wood corners, which prevented leaking and added longevity to the unit.

To make it more secure from predators, some people added additional chicken wire around the coop and placed it on top of pavers or a cement pad to keep them from digging under.

Owners of this coop said the assembly of it was a breeze, but cautioned that it’s best to take your time and not try to force the screws in the pre-drilled holes or the screws would strip and/or the wood would crack. With proper care in the assemble process and by adding a coat of paint or stain, they noted the coop will withstand inclement weather quite well.

Many liked the convenience of the slide out floor for easy cleaning. And many thought this coop provided good value overall, even if additional revisions or modifications were made. Of all the coops we looked at, this is one of the best rated in this price range! Not only that…it’s at the lower end of the $200-$500 price range.

What Others Say

Pros

  • Easy to clean
  • Attractive design
  • Works great if chickens are free ranging – no additional pen needed then
  • Some say it still works great after one year

Cons

  • Pieces were broken upon arrival
  • Needed to be repainted to withstand weather
  • Materials crack easily
  • May not be predator proof against larger predators
Summary

As in other reviews in the lower end of this price range, many reviewers noted issues related to poor quality materials or issues with cracked materials upon arrival. Some said the coop worked great once some necessary modifications were made i.e. replacing the locks, giving it another coat of paint etc. Many people commented how nice it looked in their yard and said it was nicely functional right out of the box. A few reviewers had it for over a year and gave it rave reviews.

So it’s a mixed bag…some good, some bad. You’ll have to determine if it’s worth buying as is with the understanding you may need to do a bit of tweaking with the design to make it a bit more sturdy, predator proof, and waterproof.  Also – there were a number of complaints about some of the materials being cracked or broken during shipping, another potential downfall.

For the money, it’s not a bad value but if you don’t want to tinker with making revisions to it, it may not be the right choice for you.

What Others Say…

Pros

  • Attractive design
  • Price was reasonable
  • Easy to Assemble
  • Good customer service

Cons

  • Materials warp when it rains
  • Needs weatherproofing
  • A bit tight for 4 chickens
  • Hard to follow instructions
  • Pieces missing or broken when arrived
Summary

As with other coops in this price range, there were issues with quality and materials warping when wet, making it so that owners of this coop had to make revisions and screw down boards that were lifting or warping. Many people liked the design and thought the layout of the roosts and nest boxes was great.

In terms of overall quality, many did not think it would stand the test of time. However, others followed the suggestion of the company and added more stain or paint to the coop to extend its longevity. Below is a disclaimer added by the company:

“Note: Our chicken coops are not guaranteed to be weather-tight and may need additional weather-proofing based on your climate/ weather conditions”

This coop has not been around a long time so as time goes on, it will be interesting to see how it will be rated moving forward. Reviews vary from people loving it to people hating it, all for different reasons. It appears that the coop has fallen short on providing clear instructions but, oddly enough, owners of the coop also say it was simple to assemble so it seems there is a bit of a discrepancy there.

What Others Say…

Pros

  • Looks great
  • Holds 6 hens comfortably…some say 8
  • Easy to Assemble
  • Easy to Clean
  • Lots of nest boxes for the price
  • Great for a backyard chicken coop

Cons

  • Issues with materials being cracked or broken upon arrival home
  • Some of the materials thin and hard to repair
  • Some thought it was smaller than anticipated
Summary

All in all, this coop gets favorable ratings over many other coops in this price range. People enjoyed how easy it is to clean and noted how many nest boxes and roosts there were compared to similarly priced chicken coops. No mention of having to repaint or re-stain this coop out of the box, but some reviewers did to further waterproof and/or paint the coop the color they wanted for their yard or pasture.

While some owners of this coop noted that 6 chickens, or even 8 chickens, could be housed comfortably, others said it seemed much smaller once out of the box. Ease of access for cleaning and access to eggs were other highlights.

But like any product, nothing’s perfect. The cons indicted issues related to shipping or possible weak materials that arrived cracked or broken. Some reviewers made reinforcements to the coop and then tried to get a refund, but were unable to once they did this – So if your coop comes with damaged parts, call the company first so there is still a way to return it!

Although this coop may have some faults, the reviews indicate this coop is not a bad value. As with many chicken coops that are ordered online, some of the materials are lighter weight, presumably because they need to ship them so the manufacturers find ways to limit this to reduce costs. However, many noted the coop was sturdy.

Also – no reviews mentioned issues with predators being able to break in. Looking at all of these factors, this coop appears to be of higher quality than many others in this price range.

  • 4 doors that are lockable (2 for the coop and run respectively)
  • Made of Canadian Hemlock
  • Dimensions: 26.38 inches x 53.15 inches x 40.75 inches
What Others Say…

Pros

  • Easy assembly
  • Attractive design
  • Ease of use
  • Company has good customer service

Cons

  • 6 Chickens is tight
  • Cracked materials upon arrival
  • Troubles with latches
  • Poor quality
Summary

Reviews are mixed for the zoovilla. In looking at it, it has some features that make it look more sturdy, like reinforced corners, larger latches than other comparably priced coops, and an asphalt roof. However, most reviewers rated it poorly on quality of materials, with the wood splitting etc. Others said that if the directions were followed properly, there were no issues with wood splitting or latches not fitting together well.

Across the board, owners of this coop liked the look of the coop, but many said it felt too small for 6 chickens, some saying that it may be better suited for 2 – 4 chickens.

There are not a lot of reviews out on this coop yet, but so far the trend is very split between positive and negative. Some give it high ratings, others very low ratings…not a lot of middle ground so far. Again, quality of materials and broke pieces upon arrival are a few of the drawbacks listed here.

The customer service of this company was rated high so that may offset some of its downfalls. Also, like many coops in this price point, the materials are noted to be “flimsy” and needing reinforcements. If you’re ok with making a few of these adjustments, the coop may work just fine for your flock.

  • Easy access to eggs – hinged outside access door
  • Nest box
  • 2 Roosts
  • Good ventilation
  • Doors that lock with bolts
  • Wheels make it portable to move all over your yard
What Others Say…

Pros

  • Attractive looking design
  • Protection from aerial predators (not as well for larger ground predators)
  • Price
  • Can be a good, functional coop but only with reinforcements made to the design

Cons

  • Poor directions
  • Hard to assemble
  • Wheels don’t turn well, twists when maneuvering/trying to move it.
  • Poor quality materials
  • Wood cracks
  • Metal screws strip easily
  • Some materials cracked or broken upon arrival
Summary

Unfortunately, the majority of reviews for this coop were negative…and there were a lot of reviews available. Many current owners of this coop said that they appreciated the design and, with some added bracing on the run, it was usable. But there were very few reviews which stated the coop was ready to go right out of the box.

Also, much care was needed when assembling the coop not to crack the wood materials or strip screw heads when putting it together.

Some reviewers noted that lower price made it worth taking a chance on, since they were comfortable making needed revisions to make it a more functional coop. Many stated that the wheels don’t turn well, and they need to lift the coop off the ground to move it without breaking the framing of the run.

So this coop MAY be a good option for you if you’re willing to put in some extra money into reinforcing the framing of the run and coop, and possibly changing the wheels or wheel design (adding larger swivel wheels is one idea). Other possible revisions would be to add roofing materials, although leaking roofs were not a common issue.

  • Beautiful design

  • Easy to assemble
  • Chickens love it
  • Good backyard coop

Cons

  • Materials are thin and flimsy
  • Started coming apart after a short while
  • Smaller than imagined
  • May need revisions/reinforcements to make it more sturdy
Summary

Many owners of the coop are very excited about it! Some report that the design makes it look very nice in their yard or backyard. As with a lot of coops in this price range, the wood was described as “cheap,” “flimsy” but others thought it held together well.

Some owners thought the manufacturer was accurate when stating that the coop can house 3 larger chickens. One reviewer said it held 4 Bantam chickens comfortably as well.

Across the board, people commented how easy it was to assemble. Some people suggested weather proofing it to better withstand against the elements. This may depend a lot on what type of climate you live in, however.

The coop has not been around very long and reviews are limited. So far, this nice looking little coop is getting mostly positive reviews! We’ll see if this is the case moving forward.

  • Attractive design
  • Price
  • Worked great after reinforcements added out of the box
  • Easy assembly

Cons

  • Confusing directions
  • Wood materials are “soft”
  • Hardware breaks easily (like latches)
  • Not predator proof from larger predators as wire mesh caves in quite easily, but ok for aerial predators
  • Needs weather proofing to better withstand wet conditions
  • Does not stand the test of time without making revisions/improvements
Summary

There are very few chicken coops bought online that don’t need at least a few modifications out of the box, either for shipping related issues i.e. cracked or broken materials, or design issues that need to be addressed. This coop is no exception.

There were a high number of positive ratings for this coop but nearly all of them reported that additional modifications of some kind needed to be made so the coop was more functional. Often it was wood cracking in various areas, or latches, hinges etc. needing to be replaced for heavier duty items. But once these modifications were made, many owners seemed to really love this coop.

Depending on where you live, you may need to really predator proof this coop against Raccoons etc. as the wire mesh enclosure is simply stapled into the frame and can be pushed in. Again – if predators aren’t a concern in your area, this is not a major concern, and the wire will easily keep out the aerial predators like hawks, owls etc.

This coop is recommended over many other coops in this price range. It’s not perfect and revisions will have to be made. But the fact that there are a higher percentage of positive vs negative ratings make this coop one to consider for coops in the $200 to $500 range.

What Others Say…

Pros

  • Attractive design
  • Price

Cons

  • Poorly made materials, many people rated it as “flimsy,” “cheap”
  • Cracked materials upon arrival
  • Poor design
  • Instructions were not clear and hard to follow
  • Hard to assemble
Summary

After checking out the features presented by the company, we were hoping this coop would get better ratings. Unfortunately nearly all ratings were negative. Common themes were poor materials, cracked pieces out of the box, poor instructions, hard to put together, boxes shipped in two separate dates a long time apart, and that owners did not think the coop would last long at all.

I wish there were a few positives to add here but, unfortunately, those were hard to find in this coop. The coop looks great and has such a lovely classic barn look. And the roof is asphalt so should be water repellent but some reviews indicated areas in the roof needed to be caulked or sealed before it could be functional.

One reviewer who had a negative experience with the coop said that the company was willing to work with him for a significant discount. We were glad to read the company works with its customers in that regard.

This coop may be usable but nearly every review indicated that improvements needed to be made to compensate for the lack of quality in materials and design. If you’re willing to do that because of the price and for how nice the coop looks, go for it.  Being a handy guy myself, I may be willing to do that, especially if the price is right…but if the overall quality is so poor and the number of improvements that need to be made are so many, I’d forget about it and simply look for another or build my own.

  • Attractive design
  • Easy to follow instructions
  • Easy to Assemble
  • Good waterproof roof
  • Plenty of room for 3, maybe  4 larger chickens

Cons

  • Doors swelled and would not open properly when coop got wet
  • Coop has thin, light materials that may not be durable over time
  • Latches on come doors are simply wood pieces and need replacing with metal latches
Summary

There are not a lot of reviews available yet on this lovely little coop. But the feedback from reviewers thus far has been mostly positive! We hope this trend continues and people find this coop to be a good value. Great looks and flexibility of run design are highlights of this coop.

Some owners stated that the materials warped when wet, which could be addressed by taking the doors off and sanding the edges a bit. Or, the problem could also be lessened by adding an additional layer of paint or stain to the coop. Like other coops in this price range, the materials it’s made of are lighter and not as solid as buying the materials yourself and building your own.

However – considering a lot of the work is done for you, having to make a few modifications here and there may not seem like a big deal when compared to building a coop from scratch…food for thought.

  • Lots of roosts in the coop and one in the run
  • Good roofing material (asphalt)
  • Holds 6 regular sized chickens comfortably…8 is pushing it, but it can work
  • Easy to follow instructions
  • Easy Assembly

Cons

  • Wood materials are thin and dry and can crack easily
  • Run looks a bit flimsy and needed reinforcement if in an area with hungry predators
  • Some thought it would be too tight for 8 chickens
  • Shipping issues – boxes did not come at same time
  • Roosts come out easily
Summary

Another coop that has a beautiful design but needs a few tweaks here and there to make it ready for your flock. A lot of owners felt the coop was easy to put together and didn’t mind adding a few reinforcements to the run to make it more predator proof.

Others did not like having to mess with this type of revision, thinking they should have a coop that’s ready to go right out of the box…but in this price point, it’s a fairly common theme to see people needing to make a few revisions to make the coop to the specs they want.

What stood out for us is that people were posting pictures of the coop, and longer reviews that were positive. It’s also one of the larger coops in this price range, making it appealing if you have or want a larger flock! Once again – if you are open to making a few revisions/reinforcements to the coop, it can be a good value at this price considering it can hold 8 chickens!

Features
What Others Say

Pros

  • Attractive design
  • Housed 4 chickens (although the suggest number of chickens is 2, per the company)
  • Good customer service

Cons

  • None….yet
Summary

I can’t write a great deal about this coop as there aren’t a lot of reviews there yet. But in looking at the design, it looks like this coop has higher quality, thicker materials than many of its rivals in this price range.

The corners of the coop are thicker and wider than in many other designs. The metal roof is another big draw as it will last so much longer than other materials, and it’s easy to clean if moss settles on it – just pressure wash or use a rag to wipe it off.

Also – the company seems very transparent about what they value and discuss wanting to make their coops “cruelty free,” not condoning a practice of housing more hens than a coop can safely and humanely hold.

The design of this coop makes it look like a “human” house, which we thought was a nice touch. The drawback of the design is not having an attached run to the coop. The company sells runs as well which can be bought and then attached to this coop. Otherwise, your flock will have to be free ranged all day and then locked inside the coop at night.

The 3 year warranty is what led me to add this coop in this article – not many competitors in this price range offer that kind of warranty. Also – the “beefed up” design make this a top coop in our book, and offsets the lack of attached run.

It’s too early to tell how this coop will fare in terms of quality and longevity. Keep checking back here or to the Amazon periodically to keep checking.

What Others Say…

Pros

  • Attractive design
  • Good company to work with – good customer service; ethical/humane philosophy
  • Easy to clean
  • Easy access to eggs

Cons

  • Hard to follow directions
  • Some materials seemed “flimsy”
  • Floors fall out
  • Doors swell and warp during wet weather, causing problems shutting them
  • Not super sturdy
Summary

The reviews of this coop range are either on the positive or negative end of the spectrum, with few placing it in the middle. It got rave reviews for it’s looks and charm. Others thought the coop was a good starter coop.

Some owners of this coop said that it held up very well in harsh weather, even in heavy rains. Others said that the materials started warping when it rained.  The materials were often described as thin or flimsy and the hardware as cheap. Many thought it may not last more than a few years and made revisions of their own to improve quality and increase longevity.

Although the company said it would comfortably house 2 hens, some reviewers note it held 6 larger chickens, and up to 8 bantams. As a side note – the company seems very transparent about what they value and discuss wanting to make their coops “cruelty free,” not condoning a practice of housing more hens than a coop can safely and humanely hold. We like that. Also – many owners said the company was responsive to any concerns or issues they had with their coop.

Like many coops in this range, owners made revisions to make up for design flaws. Some people added more paint, others attached the coop to a firmly secured post or shed to ensure it wouldn’t blow away. Others reinforced the floor as some owners experienced the floors falling out occasionally.

Another review mentioned reinforcing the run to ward off any attacks by predators. And replacing the latches etc. was also mentioned.

So if you’re willing to make a few adjustments to bulk up on the quality of this coop, you’ll get a beautiful coop! The design is gorgeous.

Closing Thoughts

If spending this much money online without seeing the coop is scary for you, we totally get it! It’s a lot of money to dump on something you’re simply seeing a few pictures of online. You can always just peruse the options available at your local farm store where you can actually get a first hand look at ones and get some additional information from the staff.

You can also find some local chicken coop builders on Craigslist or OfferUp. Many of these companies will allow you to see their coops upfront and may even deliver for you.

However, the only downside to either buying at your area farm store or local Craigslist is selection…they may not have a large variety of coops to choose from. And that’s when looking online can really open up the possibilities.

What we noticed when researching the coops in this price range is that owners had to make a few variations to the coop to beef up it’s overall quality, which is unfortunate. However, when you think about how much time and money was saved, it may not be such a big deal to make these modifications after all.

Think about it. The coop is already made and shipped to you at a price between $200 and $500. If you had to come up with a plan (which is time consuming) and then buy all materials at your local box store (time consuming and head ache making), it would place you roughly in that same price range anyway…just food for thought.

Having said that – many people LOVE the idea of making a coop the way they want to make it, so the added time and planning is no big deal.

My hope is that you’ve now been inundated with enough information to choose the coop that’s right for your wallet and your flock. Good luck!
